The Best Back-to-School Gift Ideas for Reception Starters

The day is here at last - and where has the time gone? Your little one starting school is a huge milestone and so exciting for all the family. And while there’s plenty to prepare, choosing the right back-to-school gifts can turn those 1st day jitters into a magical moment. The Must-Have Back-to-School Gift: Their 1st Backpack The transition from nursery to reception marks the beginning of a whole new chapter. It’s where independence starts to bloom; new things to learn, new friendships to make, and a growing sense of identity and belonging. If there’s one item that defines the school experience from day one, it’s their school bag. More than just a place to store their things, their school backpack quickly becomes part of their daily routine. It’s what they’ll carry into the classroom each morning and proudly hang on their peg. A personalised backpack makes this moment even more special. It helps teachers and children easily identify their belongings, but also gives your child something that feels truly theirs. Seeing their name on their bag builds confidence and a sense of independence from the very beginning. For help on what kind of backpack to choose, take a peek at How to Choose the Perfect Personalised Backpack for Your Child and our backpack buying guide, too. Thoughtful Starting School Gift Ideas They’ll Actually Use While the backpack takes centre stage, it’s the smaller, coordinating pieces that complete the experience - and make everyday routines feel a little more exciting, too. Matching Lunch Bags, Lunchboxes & Water Bottles There’s something undeniably satisfying about a matching set. A coordinated lunch bag and water bottle not only look beautiful but also help children quickly recognise their belongings during busy school days. For parents, it’s a simple way to bring a sense of order to the morning routine. For children, it adds a touch of fun to snack time and lunchtime - moments that can feel especially important in those early weeks. They’re also incredibly useful in households with more than one child, especially if each child’s belongings share a colour or theme. Personalised Pencil Cases & Stationery Reception is often a child’s 1st introduction to “big school” things. A personalised pencil case filled with colourful stationery can spark creativity and give them a sense of pride in their learning. Although it might just be used before that very 1st day - some things are just too exciting, after all…! Comfort Items for the Transition Even the most confident children can feel a little unsure at first. Including a small, comforting item in their school bag - something soft and familiar, like a personalised toy - can offer some reassurance throughout the day. These pieces don’t need to be large or distracting. Sometimes, it’s simply about knowing something special from home is close by. Be sure to check with your school or child’s teacher on what items are allowed before packing a teddy or toy - just in case. School Shoe Bags & PE Bags Often overlooked, these practical additions can make a big difference to daily organisation. A personalised shoe or PE bag helps keep everything in its place, making mornings smoother and school days less stressful. And when they match the rest of their set, they contribute to that lovely sense of cohesion parents appreciate just as much as children do. Creating the Perfect Matching Back-to-School Set If you’re looking to make the moment feel extra special, a complete matching set is a beautiful way to do it. Combining a backpack with coordinating essentials - like a lunch bag, lunch box, water bottle, and pencil case - creates a cohesive look that feels both thoughtful and practical. It simplifies busy mornings, helps children stay organised, and adds a sense of excitement to getting ready for school. How to Choose the Right 1st Day at School Gift With so many options available, it can be helpful to focus on what will truly make a difference for your child. Consider Their Personality Choosing colours, prints or styles they love can help them feel more confident and excited about school. Whether they’re drawn to something bold and bright or something softer, letting their personality shine through makes the experience more personal to them. Think About Practicality Durability, size, and ease of use are key. Reception children need items that are simple to carry, easy to open, and built to withstand daily use. Don’t Forget Personalisation Personalisation brings both emotional and practical benefits. It helps prevent lost items while also creating a sense of ownership that’s incredibly valuable at this stage. Helping Them Feel Ready for Their 1st Day Simple routines can make a big difference. Practising packing their backpack, letting them choose their lunch items, or even doing a “practice run” of the school morning - for more tips, check out our guide to Preparing for the First School Run: Tips for Parents. Involving them in choosing their back-to-school gifts also gives them a sense of control and excitement. When they feel connected to their belongings, they’re more likely to feel comfortable using them. FAQs What should I buy a child starting reception? A combination of practical essentials and meaningful keepsakes works best. A personalised backpack, lunch bag, and a few smaller accessories will help them feel prepared and confident. Do reception children need a backpack? Yes, most schools expect children to bring a small backpack to carry their lunch, water bottle, and any school items. It also helps them build independence from day one. It’s helpful to check with the school, as different schools have different requirements. Are personalised school bags worth it? Personalised bags make it easier to identify belongings and reduce the chances of items being lost. They also give children a sense of ownership and pride. What size backpack is best for reception? Look for a compact, lightweight backpack designed for younger children. It should comfortably fit essentials without being too bulky for small shoulders. For a style that will last throughout Key Stage 1 and beyond, our Medium backpack is super spacious - easily fitting in their PE kit, lunchbox, water bottle and books. Make Their 1st Day Even More Special Explore our personalised back-to-school collection to find beautifully made pieces designed to support, comfort, and celebrate every step of their journey. From their very 1st backpack to perfectly coordinated essentials, create something they’ll carry with confidence on their 1st big day - and beyond.
