It’s a well-known fact that sweet dreams are made of the perfect night-time routine… which might explain why getting little ones to sleep is often so difficult! Evenings with toddlers generally don’t have a singular pattern and that can make getting them to switch off a hard task when night-time comes around. Sleep can get even harder for toddlers (and parents!) when there’s a newborn around because although the excitement which surrounds a fresh addition is wonderful, it is a big change which can make little ones extra alert as they take everything in. To help adjust to this new change, we recommend giving your toddler’s bedtime routine a little overhaul as soon as possible once your newborn is home. Naturally, this isn’t easy when you’re trying to keep on top of a baby, so here are our top tips to make your sleep life a little easier:-
GET THEM TIRED… BUT NOT TOO TIRED
Sometimes all little ones need is a little wearing out to help them hit the hay. Specifically, lightly playing with your infant for an hour or two before their bedtime has been scientifically proven to help them fall asleep a little easier. If possible, having your newborn around in this time is a lovely way to encourage engagement between siblings. Yet be careful, toddlers can get overtired easily and whilst it might sound strange, when this happens they can actually find it very hard to get to sleep. Once you can spot your child’s signs of tiredness make sure to end play and progress to the next stages of their bedtime quickly.
CHOOSE SPECIAL PYJAMAS
The saying goes, you are what you wear and at night-time, this matters more than usual! Specifically, cosy, quality pyjamas can make a big difference in getting little ones to drift off to the land of nod. At My 1st Years, all our pyjamas are made of ultra soft, high-quality fabric to ensure they are gentle and comfortable on infant skin. Additionally, they can all be personalised for free helping to make them extra special. Start your little ones bedtime routine by putting them in our sweet sets and watch them wind down!
DON’T FORGET BATH-TIME
Nothing says bed-time like a cosy bath in the evening! For both newborns and toddlers, a warm evening bath is a perfect way to relax after a long and busy day. We recommend trying to get your little one in the bath around an hour before you’d like them to be asleep to help ensure they have enough time to properly soak and splash about to tire them out before bed. Once out of the bath, wrap them up in one of our ultra soft personalised towels to dry them off and get them ready for bed.
THINK ABOUT LIGHT
When there’s a newborn about, there’s a lot more light around the house in the evenings, as you navigate their sleeping in short bursts. This constant change in light and darkness can make it difficult for little ones to properly switch off and so we suggest investing in night lights around the house so that when you wake up and have to tend to your newborn, the light doesn’t have to disrupt your little one.
