With over 15 years’ experience organising children’s events and parties I always start the planning process with this brief in mind. “To organise a party that firstly appeals to the birthday child and their guests but also takes the stress away from the parents and ensures they enjoy the experience just as much!”
Often we meet with our clients and their children, to get direction from the birthday child about their ideas for their special day. For example, we had a wonderful client whose daughter wanted a Greatest Showman Party, she loved the music, dancing and had ideas of stilt walkers, acrobats and of course a Ring Master.
Start planning early
I would always advise anyone planning a party to book your venue and entertainment early. The best venues and entertainers always get booked up. Once this part is organised everything else can fall into place including the styling of the party.
Choose a theme
It can be useful to do a moodboard on something like pinterest to collate your favourite ideas for inspiration. As party planners with a strong focus on stylish parties, we like to ensure the theme and colour scheme runs through the whole party from the invitations to the costumes to the take home bags. Many an hour have we spent trying to find the right colour soft play or inflatable for example to fit into a party colour scheme.
Make it personal
Details and personalisation are important to create impact on the day but also to give the parents memories to hold onto. With our Greatest Showman party we used lanyards for the invitations, so that the children could turn up with their ticket for the party.
Choose the right entertainment
Children are so different and whilst some like entertainment, others prefer quieter arts and crafts activities or interactive challenges; my advice would be to create different layers to your entertainment, so there is something for everyone to do. Also, ensure some of the entertainment appeals to the grown-ups. For example, our Greatest Showman party had a mixture of magic, circus skills, arts and crafts, interactive props and a show element.
Make it Instagramable
We are passionate about styling and ensuring the party just looks as good as it feels. Make sure you use a consistent colour scheme, often simple is better. Balloons are a fabulous way of creating impact and transformation and will ensure an instagramable snap or two! If you have the budget, a professional photographer will ensure you get to enjoy your party and you get a record of the day.
Include personal touches and a few surprises; our client wanted the frozen rolled ice cream as a treat for both the parents and the children. Something new is always good to create a talking point.
When I look back at this party, it felt as if from the moment all the guests arrived they were transported to the Greatest Show. It was very immersive, the children were kept entertained for the duration, the parents were relaxed and happy with a good supply of refreshments. There were special moments as the birthday girl danced a routine with her friends on the stage and everyone left having had the best time. For us there is nothing better and we feel a real sense of emotion at having helped create a memorable event for everyone involved.
