How To Prepare for A New Baby

There are few experiences more unique in life than pregnancy. Even with the waves of morning sickness, weeks of swollen feet and occasional bouts of random food aversions, most women testify that carrying a child is the greatest achievement of their life. Those special nine months do have a tendency to go by very quick though and it is not uncommon for women to reach their last few weeks of pregnancy and still feel completely unprepared for meeting their little one.

Whilst, of course, nothing can truly prepare you for how your life will change, activities such as, purchasing nursery essentials, packing your hospital bag and stocking up on first month necessities will make it that little bit easier to adjust in those early days. Additionally, preparation will put your mind at ease so you can focus on your precious new arrival. If you’re preparing for your first child, it can be overwhelming to know where to start so to give you a helping hand we’ve put together a little checklist of how/what to get ready in each trimester:

The first trimester is often one full of emotions, as you adjust to the realities of being pregnant and experience the first signs of your changing body. Though your baby is at its smallest, this is when it will do the most growing, forming all its major organs by three months. Then, in this precious time, the most important preparation you can do is to take care of yourself. Make sure to start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you can and adjust your diet to ensure you are getting essential nutrients for you and your baby.

Also, take this trimester to have a look at your home and consider if it will be well suited for your new addition. Whilst nine months can seem like a long time, it is likely to go by quickly and as home renovations can take a while, the sooner you start thinking about changes, the better.

Often nicknamed the ‘golden trimester’, the second trimester is considered by most Mums to be the most comfortable of the three. As the traditional symptoms of pregnancy begin to subside and a pregnancy bump begins to develop, Mums-to-be generally report that it is at this stage of their pregnancy, their impending little one begins to feel ‘”real”. As well as enjoying and documenting special moments such as the first kick, the second trimester is the perfect time to start thinking more about you birth and how things will change after.

We recommend signing up to a birthing class in these weeks, as they tend to fill up quickly and ideally you want to have finished your course, two weeks before your due date. Such a class will be great for giving you a rough idea of what to expect in labour and techniques on how t to handle the experience.  This is also a great time to buy a few maternity pieces to ensure that you stay comfortable whilst your bump starts growing. Finally, we suggest starting to think about what childcare you will be interested in after birth. Similar to birthing classes, childcare tends to be oversubscribed so making decisions in this will make life easier.

You’re nearly there! On the final leg of your pregnancy journey, you’ll find you’re body slowing down naturally as your bump grows bigger and your body gets ready to give birth. Your priority during this time is to take to easy and make sure you’re getting lots of rest. Pamper yourself with warm baths and relaxing activities like reading and watching your favourite films. Towards the end of this time, birth is imminent so it’s important to be as prepped as possible. If you’re planning a hospital birth, prepare your hospital bag ahead of time and create a birth plan. If you don’t have the energy for doing some of these final things yourself, get help from loved ones and carry out the tasks together.
